Pirate Party Australia And The South Australian State Election

Unfortunately, although the South Australian Pirate Party has undergone significant progress in its capacity and development was not in a position to contest candidates for the South Australian Elections, and we’ve now focused our attentions on the upcoming federal elections. However the South Australian election on 20th of March is important, and the party needs you to send a strong message to the both the state and federal Labor governments.

Whilst the the Pirate Party Australia, SA Branch aren’t fielding our own candidates, we have identified a few other Parties and candidates we think best reflect the ideals – that voters who would have otherwise voted ‘Pirate’ should consider.

Gamers4Croydon (G4C) is running candidates in both the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council. G4C campaigns on a number of issues that overlap with the Pirate Party platform, including both opposition to Internet censorship, and a more sensible classification system, with the introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games. Those who feel strongly about these issues, should examine their other policies, and consider voting for G4C’s candidates.

If you are considering an independent as a better option for your vote, we recommend you consider David Winderlich – the last elected Australian Democrat, resigned and turned Independent. David also opposes the use of Internet Censorship to regulate the Internet, and his platform is orientated around civil liberties, much like the Pirate Parties. If you agree with his stance on other policies, you might consider voting for David.

For those thinking you’d rather vote for the ‘devil you know’, we might suggest you preference the Liberal Party over the Labor Party. Even though the Liberal opposition was complicit in the passing of terrible anti-freedom-of-speech laws, it is important we send a message and make it clear that such assaults on fundamental freedoms are not acceptable. Whilst some prominent figures within the federal Liberal Party have spoken of civil liberty, this has yet to be actioned on in any concrete sense within the Party. However, if you must vote for a major party…

We do ask that you preference Family First and Labor last.

There are a raft of different candidates standing for election this year, from different political backgrounds with varying platforms. Please take the time to investigate the candidates and what they stand for. Your vote is the most powerful action you can take in a democracy like ours. Make it count.
