Minutes

Brisbane Cryptoparty Venue

  • Free venue unable to be located; suggestion for a donation on entry to cover venue hire costs.
  • http://hsbne.org/ suggested as a possible venue.
  • Seek help from local hackerspaces, Linux Users Groups etc.

Freedom of Information Update:

  • Rodney lodged a FoI request pertaining to National Security Inquiry legislation.
    • Rejected on invalid grounds. An appeal will be made to the OAIC, although it is unlikely to be effective due to the 12 month backlog.
  • Brendan's Classification Database FoI request.
    • 45 day delay thus far, with 2x 7 day extensions.
    • Scope still being determined.
    • Brendan will update PPAU as more information is received.

auIGF Update

  • Brendan, Glen and Adam (devdsp) attended the auIGF (Australian Internet Governance Forum).
  • Constructive discussions with other attendees.
  • Some of PPAUs copyright stances were fairly moderate, compared to those presented by other industry representatives.
  • Networking with ACCAN, ISOC-AU, auDA, EFA etc.
  • ALRC seems to side with PPAUs stance on copyright.

Party Registration Update

  • Thursday/Friday is the likely day of submission of documentation to the AEC to apply for registration
  • Over 500 people are new members, or current members who have confirmed and/or updated their registration details.
  • PPAU representatives are working to verify the remaining memberships.
  • People who have not responded to e-mails will be contacted via phone.

ACT Election Results

  • Candidates ran as independents due to the ACT branch of the Pirate Party being unregistered.
  • ACT has 3 electorates in which PPAU-ACT fielded a candidate.
  • Attained 0.5% 0.5% and 0.4% of votes with minimal campaign efforts.
  • Large swings against independents in some electorates (-8%).
  • "Bullet Train for Canberra Party) Attained 4% by comparison.
  • PPAU-ACT stands an excellent chance in future elections, especially as people are becoming familiar with the name.

PPCZ Election

  • Czech Pirate Party entered national parliament with the election of a senator.
  • First directly elected national Pirate candidate in the world.
  • He attained 75% in the runoff vote, with the assistance of preferences from the Christian Democrats.
  • A impressive result considering they use a FPTP voting system.
  • PPCZ campaigned on a platform of ending corruption.

National Security Inquiry Update

  • Senator Scott Ludlam (Greens) probed ASIO and AFP last week.
  • Submission by the AGD explaining their demands, including a clarification of the term "metadata".
  • They don't want to track website visits, rather location data such as proximity of citizens to mobile cells etc.
  • AGD's method of dealing with a failure to decrypt data is a blanket 2 year gaol sentence.
    • Obvious repercussions to journalists, lawyers, doctors, whistle blowers etc.
  • Still waiting for legislation to be released.

Copyright Review

  • Extensive review of copyright law being undertaken currently.
  • Assistance is needed with PPAUs submission.

Data Breach Legislation - discussion paper

  • New Inquiry being undertaken.
  • See: http://www.ag.gov.au/Consultationsreformsandreviews/Pages/Australian-Privacy-Breach-Notification.aspx
  • Suggests an institution of mandatory data breach notification, so citizens can protect their data/identity when a breach does occur.
  • This is in line with PPAU policy.
  • Opposition to the reforms by Banks.
  • Interested people should contact (Simon) Frew.
  • Biggest fault may be that the legislation may not be effective in practice or able to be enforced.
  • Some conflicting arguments in the discussion paper; possibly an attempt at neutrality. Probably to allow wiggle room in the event of a backlash.

Status of formation of PPAU-VIC

  • Attendance at fortnightly meetings has been lackluster.
  • Survey is underway of people's preferred time and location (~20 responses so far).
  • Only about 4 core members + 1~2 new people each meeting.
  • King Street location is not ideal and avoided by many. Possible move back to The Oxford Scholar, pending opening hours.
  • Suggestions for a fixed date meeting (i.e. different day each month so more people can attend), weekends, or online.
  • Preference for a physical meeting as it builds communities and allows members to meet.
  • Constitution draft is under way, based partly on the PPAU constitution, electoral act and association rules.
