Minutes

TPP Protests

  • There is a round of Trans-Pacific Partnership protests coming up in February.
  • Feb 7 was called as an international day of action by some Occupy-related activists.
  • Anonymous has also gotten involved, and is claiming ownership.
  • It has been quite aggressive, saying no Unions, NGOs or Greens are allowed to speak.
    • This is being ignored in Melbourne and possible Brisbane.
    • Sydney's organising has stagnated; it has fallen on Frew to organise.
    • There will be an organisational meeting this Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Paragon Hotel in Sydney.
    • The Sydney protest will likely be held separate from Anonymous.
  • Pirate Party works well with the Greens, and the Greens do bring people along to protests.
  • We need both the ALP and Greens on side to defeat the TPP
  • Working with as broad a coalition as possible is the best option
  • Should be approached on a city-by-city basis.
  • See what is happening; help where possible; and avoid protests where the organisers aren't going to work in broad coalitions.
  • We should avoid being lumped in with the fringe-dwellers.
  • We can help organise additional protests away from Anonymous-organised ones if need be.

TIA Act Review

  • A reminder that the submission for the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act is due in about a month, and if people would like to help there is a meeting in #ppau-tiarev next Tuesday at 8:30 pm (Sydney time).
  • Email Frew if more details are needed, or ask questions in #ppau-tiarev.

National Council constitutional amendment

  • A reminder to everyone that tomorrow night the National Council will vote to amend the Constitution.
  • Raising this at the General Meeting for the purposes of transparency.
  • Everyone should've got an announcement.
  • It's to include a clause stating we're a non-profit organisation so we get benefits.
  • The text is in the announcement, and will be presented at the NC meeting tomorrow night

PDC Report

  • The first proper Policy Development Committee (PDC) meeting for a while happened last week.
  • There have been a couple of resignations due to people with other commitments needing to leave.
  • Received three new applications, and these will be voted on by the NC tomorrow night.
  • Anyone else who wants to join can email [email protected] to apply.
  • Applications get voted on by the NC every two weeks.
  • There were four policy direction proposals put forward at the meeting last week.
    • Universal education, healthcare and childcare policies.
    • Revenge pornography policy.
    • Constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians policy.
    • Develop a Tort of Privacy policy.
  • Forming working groups for each of these.
  • All members are permitted to be on these working groups.
  • If you'd like to put your name down, please do so here: https://docs.google.com/a/pirateparty.org.au/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiFzeQ19ELxIdGRHbU9jam9kYWdzR2F1QmpuRGFQSWc&usp=drive_web#gid=0
  • The next PDC meeting will be on Wednesday next week, at 8:30 pm (Sydney time) in #ppau-pdc
