Minutes
Erosion of civil liberties
- Diminishing of right to silence – it will end in a net result of more convictions.
- Right to association threatened – Bikie gang court case in Qld.
- Legislation being prepared in NSW.
- Policy for Bill of Rights being proposed next weekend.
- Constitution only protects or infers a limited number of rights.
- Will require a few court cases before the application of law becomes apparent.
Policy and pre-selection meeting
- Meeting on 6th and 7th April
- Only have two nominees for pre-selection, both from NSW.
- Still may have two candidates from Qld.
- Trying to get one more from Vic.
- Need two candidates to get a grouping.
- Might end up having a lot of policy discussion on the Saturday.
- Policies will probably take about 45 minutes each:
- Two speakers for, two against.
- Amendments.
- Room vote.
- Full party vote over seven days.
- Any candidates not physically present will be made to do a recorded video.
- Brendan will monitor IRC and motion on people's behalf.
Election stuff
& Last sitting of Parliament prior to spill vote of no-confidence against government.
- If an election is called now, it will only be called for House of Representatives.
- Earliest date for Senate election is July 1.
- Double dissolution may still happen.
- We would have better opportunity in a double dissolution because it halves the required threshold to 7%.
- Congress will need to be mid-June.
