Previous Meetings Minutes
Data Retention
- Brendan: Attended the Data Retention event at Parliament House, our position was well received
- Pointed out it was an attack of free expression, people will change their behaviour to protect their privacy
- also pointed out we are categorised as anti-law enforcement when we are pro proportionality
- Data Retention bill dropped this morning
- Brendan couldn't find anyone to help
- Got Mozart on PRs
- Brandon onboard for analysis of the legislation
- Brendan did ABC Radio interview
- Party demonstratively has resourcing and process issues for major shitstorms
- Brendan couldn't find anyone to help
- Senator Ludlam called Brendan with media advice
- IPA happy to work with us on media strategy and resource sharing
- Never worked so closely with any organisations as we are as of today
- This has really galvanised the whole spectrum of civil liberties related groups
- Even GetUp realises they need to seriously deal with this
- JCIS has the bill
- Conroy and Plibersek dropped from JCIS replaced with Jason Clare (Shadow Communications) and Dreyfus (Shadow AG)
- We can win this if we get Labor to block it
- Legislation likely not to appear until next year
- Daniel: short of having numerous random citizens flooding ALP senators and backbenchers I don't see what else can actually be done insofar as actually preventing it
- Today the media was controlled by people against the bill
- We put out an image
- Open Discussion
- Daniel: 'supposedly individually written snail mail letters are still the most effective means of non monied lobbying?' 'We need to whinge enough that random folks will start writing them (or at least phoning and emailing etc)'
- Simon: Brandis is fronting qanda on monday, should try to do a video question
- Brandon: Watching the 7.30 Report. We can work with the Liberal Democrats Senator, apparently
- Mel: @Ooasvc is setting up a wiki at soapy.io, wants everyone to collate stuff
- Frew: Not a good place, .io is blocked by facebook en masse
- David Crafti: He's the new choice guy
- Brendan: We'll use our own wiki. Best to work alone as far as infrastructure goes since giving over infrastructure control usually end up with us getting screwed over.
- Daniel: https://pirateparty.org.au/wiki/National_Security_Inquiry this dates from the Roxon era on this, but could be expanded, updated, built upon
- Mark: this stands or falls depending on what the ALP does that's the only lever
- Daniel: If PUP sides with Libs, even if ALP vote against could it still get through?
- [Note: Senate is Coalition: 33, ALP: 25, Greens: 10, PUP: 2*, + 6 other party/independents. ] * at time of marking up minutes
- Brendan: The crux of the issue: I felt completely alone today more or less. This is not okay. Today was the beginning of a defining moment of this decade and we have limited capacity to handle it. I want to make it entirely clear I am not blaming anyone personally for this. I'm not blaming any natural being for this :P
- Mozart: Is it perhaps that the NC has limited capacity to do the day-to-day tasks and we would be better off bringing more people into the loop?
- Simon: maybe we have an active volunteers list, when we need all hands on deck we mail it
- Brendan: I suppose what's missing here is a culture of people saying "I see shit has hit the fan, what can I do to help?"
- Daniel: simple things like having notifications for PPAU emails on phone. tis a handy thing. i suggest ppl do it. (not much help today when i see an email as im on my way to a meeting though, but still, meant i was on it as soon as i came out of meeting, but by then PR was soon out)
- Brendan: We'll make an alerts@ list so people can filter it as priority which will email all @pirateparty.org.au addresses
- Brendan: I want a PR out tomorrow morning talking about how broken this legislation
- I want it to speak to the issue of the last legislation where the AG has the power to determine which journo is prosecuted
- We'll call it "AG to be kingmaker in journalist prosecution issues"
- and make it mostly about how this tranche of legislation is a continuance of the attack on journalism
Pozible t-shirts
- Will deal with this tomorrow or Saturday. Brendan to forward order data and contacts to Daniel
Banking
- Mark: The bank is doing stuff at their end and, as far as I know, we don't have to do anything else
- MarkG promises Brendan he wont have to deal with Credit Card dramas as soon as possible.
General Business
- Brandon and Brendan met up with some others to discuss Qld planning.
- Went well, covered everything
- Came to solid conclusions and understandings
- A few lulz were had
- All in all a great pirate party meeting
- Secretariat, what more could we do to the website to make is accessible to newbs in the next two weeks?
- We still need to move the platform to the site and make it look pretty. Getting the party more attention is great until people want to find out more and land on an unattractive wiki page.
- Brendan: yeah the attractive platform would be nice
- We still need to move the platform to the site and make it look pretty. Getting the party more attention is great until people want to find out more and land on an unattractive wiki page.
- Treasury, what could we do to make our finances more accessible?
- Will look into what options are available via xero for publishing finances
- Brendan: How about seeking donations? It'd be great if you could plan a donation strategy MarkG and try and plot out what our monthly losses are so we can recover them
- Mark: from what i know its best to link donations to a specific cause ("help us fight data retention" - or whatever)
- Brendan: no
- Mark: we should sell merch
- Mel: I just think we need to continue asserting ourselves as a major _something_ in the fight against _stuff_ - so PR's as usual, tonnes of social media, and publicity. We still don't have general flyers
- Brendan: The trick to dealing with complex systems is to break them down into simplistic ones but that X issue is actually 15 different hings
- David: We could assemble a simple script, have various people speak a line or two into their phones in selfy mode, patch it together and push it out, it will be edgy and real and relatable and inexpensive. there will be SOME work obviously, but not beyond our capabilities.
- im spitballing, we try to go too pro every time we do video
