Conclusion of review / approval of policy ideas agenda item from prior meeting

  • Originators of policy ideas to identify immediate priority policies and develop them first to ensure manageable workload and easier coordination
  • Selection of urgent priority policies to include:
    • Copyright reform
    • Abolition of gene/software patents
    • Reform of libel/anti-discrimination laws - to be researched in order to define issues more clearly
    • Citizen petition system
    • Predatory pricing in telecommunications industry
    • Outlaw discrimination by taxpayer funded bodies
    • Improve safeguards against detention
    • Protect environment from CSG mining
  • Defer development of remaining policy ideas until some existing working groups have completed their tasks.

Motion: That the PDC, as a priority, will make formal policy from existing party views on the shortening of copyright duration. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by MarkG that will produce a draft proposal including detailed policy and polly tables for the PDC meeting held nearest to 20th of February 2013

Motion: That the PDC will develop a policy (or policies) regarding the abolishment of gene and software patents. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by MarkG that will produce a draft proposal including detailed policy and polly tables for the PDC meeting held nearest to 6th of march 2013.

Motion: That the PDC will undertake research into libel and anti-discrimination laws to form policy recommendations for the protection of all citizens right to free speech. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by MarkG that will produce a report on policy recommendations for the PDC meeting held nearest to 6th of march 2013.

Motion: That the PDC will develop a policy on an official method for Australians to directly petition their federal government for a change in law or other government policy. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by AndrewD that will produce a draft proposal including detailed policy and polly tables for the PDC meeting held nearest to 20th February 2013.

Motion: That the PDC will form policy to reform telecommunications regulation in such a way as to prevent predatory pricing. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by Samk that will produce a draft proposal including detailed policy and polly tables for the PDC meeting held nearest to 6th of March 2013.

Motion: That the PDC will form policy to ensure that no organisation that receives government funding should be allowed to discriminate on any legally protected grounds. A working group will be formed for this policy area headed by David Crafti that will produce a draft proposal including detailed policy and polly tables for the PDC meeting held nearest to 20th of February 2013.

Motion: That the PDC will form policy requiring that when police detain a person, for any reason, there must be a paper trail which includes a receipt given to the detainee.
