Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I have been with the party since just after its formation. I have served as Legal Committee Coordinator, Queensland State Coordinator, on the Policy Development Committee and have run in the last two Federal elections as first candidate on the Senate Ballot.

Secretary

AlexJago 2017.jpg

Alex Jago

This candidate has won their nomination
Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I am the incumbent Secretary. I like to think that I've gotten through the year without too many unfixable screwups.
Why are you seeking the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I'm running for Secretary because I figure I've now demonstrated that I can do it. If someone more qualified than me would like to be Secretary, I'll happily take the Deputy role.
What experience/contribution have you made so far to the Pirate movement, and what will you do to advance or better the Party and movement?

In 2018-2019 I've helped fight an election (mostly in support of Miles and Brandon up here in Qld), taken on primary responsibility for the party Facebook page, and of course I've done the usual Secretariat meetings and memberships and submissions things. My authorisation tag project is now basically finished and proved its value (I think this is actually my most useful contribution).

In 2019-2020 it's been more of a keep-the-lights on thing in general, but I've maintained my various existing responsibilities.

I've been a part of all election campaigns in my area since I joined the party in 2014 (Griffith by-election; 2016 & 2019 generals).

As I keep saying, our pressing task over the next year remains to grow not just in total members but active, engaged members.

I don't pretend to have a magic solution, but I'll support things that seem like they'll help, with both my time and my influence.
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?

Yes. I've never been a member of any party except PPAU, and I hope that never changes.

I've also helped out various Greens campaigns as an HTV-person, door-knocker and map-drawer. (The first two count as campaigning skills development.)

Treasurer

John August

This candidate has won their nomination
Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
Mark G needs a break, and others including him feel I would be competent in the position
Why are you seeking the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I appreciate Mark G's past contribution to the party as Treasurer, and also generally and in policy, and as a personal gesture would like to give him the freedom to either do his own thing or contribute to party in other ways.
What experience/contribution have you made so far to the Pirate movement, and what will you do to advance or better the Party and movement?
I have stood as an election candidate several times in both the lower and upper house, which involved a solid investment of time and money each time. I have participated as a member of the National Council for several years. I have advocated several PPA positions on my community radio show in Sydney and also at Speakers corner in Sydney
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?
I am passionate about ideas in IP and these brought me to the party. I have also been involved in the Secular Party and Abolish State Governments Party. I have since developed an appreciation for other PPA ideas such as UBI

Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
This party needs more motivated people.
Why are you seeking the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I am enthusiastic about seeing a return of sensibly progressive politics within the Australian political landscape.
What experience/contribution have you made so far to the Pirate movement, and what will you do to advance or better the Party and movement?
I believe I bring a more unique point of view, to help distinguish this party as a force of it's own.
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?
It is rare to find a party that you honestly support anywhere near all of the policies within it's platform, which is what sold me on the PPA. I was for a short time a member of the Australian Sex Party, due to their strong advocacy for civil rights, but became disillusioned with them.

Happy to continue helping where I can as part of the NC.

For the past 4-5 years I've been contracting to Telstra on systems to support and automate their responsibilities with regard to the NBN rollout. If elected to the NC I will seek to faithfully reflect the consensus of our members. I have a particular interest in freedom of expression, so I will defend these liberties wherever possible.
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?
I support the bulk of our party policy as it currently stands. Pirate Party Australia is the only political party I've held formal membership in. Stay Safe!

Officers

Policy Development Officer

Pip Foweraker

This candidate has won their nomination
Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I have several years experience in drafting and implementing policy and regulations at the State and Federal levels, some of which had significant financial impacts on tens of thousands of working professionals. I am qualified and experienced in Project and Program management, which is a fancy way of saying 'I am good at wrangling opinionated technical people into something approaching consensus'. I can also write legible, accessible documentation.
Why are you seeking the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I enjoy researching, justifying and implementing policy, and I like workshopping the same with people more expert than myself. Through my working life I have built up a network of contacts in academia and private industry that PPAU could draw on for additional expertise and insights.
What experience/contribution have you made so far to the Pirate movement, and what will you do to advance or better the Party and movement?
I have been loosely involved with PPAU since its inception. I campaigned for Thomas Randle in the 2013 election in Tasmania. Now that my capacity has increased, I am keen to be more actively involved in growing and developing PPAU to a more robust political entity and can commit to devoting a good amount of time to do so.
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?
Absolutely. I have previously donated to the Australian Greens, and delivered fliers / HTV cards for them prior to the formation of PPAU.

Dispute Resolution Committee Member (2 positions)

Liam-pomfret2017.jpg

Dr Liam Pomfret

This candidate has won their nomination
Why do you feel that you are qualified for the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
Concerns over possible conflicts of interest with my position on the APF Board, as well as a need to focus on my academic work, have kept me on the relative outside of the party for a number of years now. At the same time however, this has also kept me well apart from any internal disputes and conflicts which may have occurred during that time. I feel this puts me in a good position to act as a member of the Dispute Resolution Committee, with the need to maintain strict impartiality on any issues that may arise.
Why are you seeking the position for which you have declared your candidacy?
I believe the Dispute Resolution Committee position is an ideal way for me to still contribute back to the party without interfering with my academic and civil society responsibilities.
What experience/contribution have you made so far to the Pirate movement, and what will you do to advance or better the Party and movement?

I have been with the Pirate Party since early in it's life, before it was formally registered as a party. In the early years of the party (August 2012 - July 2013), I acted as the state coordinator for QLD, organizing regular meetings in Brisbane for a relatively modest sized crew. I also stood as a PPAU candidate for the QLD Senate in the 2013 federal election. I have been a member of the Dispute Resolution Committee since 2018.

Outside of the party, I am a marketing academic, if an underemployed one with the current situation with COVID. With my research into issues of online consumer privacy, I've aimed towards finding ways to persuade consumers to act more responsibly with regards to sharing their information online; and persuading companies to shift to business models which respect and promote consumer privacy. I am also highly active on Twitter, where I've fostered strong relationships with people in the broader digital rights advocacy and activism community.
Do you agree with the Pirate Party platform and its ideals? What other political movements or parties have you been a part of?
I thoroughly believe in the Pirate Party's platform and ideals, though I may sometimes quibble over specific implementations of those. I have never been a member of any other political party. In the activist/advocacy space, I am a current board member of the Australian Privacy Foundation (and chair of its technical committee), a life member of Electronic Frontiers Australia, and a founding member of Digital Rights Watch
