Registering for local government elections in NSW

This is just a quick guide and may end up out of date with the source material, be sure to check official source material for any actual up to date information before relying on any information in here.

Deadline for 2016 elections: 31 July 2015

Notes:

  • Need 100 NSW members.
  • Each member needs sign the declaration form (good for trial run process for state?)
  • There does not appear to be a registration fee.
  • Is federal constitution usable for local govt rego purposes?

Registration is a lengthy legal process and involves careful assessment of material lodged by the applicant. You should lodge your application as soon as possible.

Parties wishing to nominate candidates for the 2016 Local Government Election must be registered by 31 July 2015.

What you need to do to become a registered political party

In order to become a registered political party applicants must, amongst other things, provide the following information to the NSW Electoral Commission.

  • an acceptable name
  • at least 100 members, who are enrolled on the NSW electoral roll, and not relied upon by another party for registration purposes
  • a registered officer
  • a written constitution that sets out the platform or objectives of the party
