Pirate code of conduct for PPAU officials

September 30th 2021

Rationale: This is a behavioural code of conduct intended to professionalise and standardise party interactions, to support our strategic goals of growth and advocacy.

Enforceability: It is not intended to be binding or enforceable, and as of time of writing is purely a personal project of the author (Miles W). As such it is not official party policy. It's more like a set of guidelines really, than a set of rules https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9ojK9Q_ARE

Whom this should apply: Members of the National Council, party officers, volunteers (if non-member engaged in party business), party members, participants in party run platforms.

When this should apply: when communicating on party run platforms, when engaging in party business, or (if a party member) when discussing the party.

Updates: I may periodically make updates depending on suggestions or other input.

  • Engage with courtesy
  • Assume good faith, and respectfully disengage if it becomes apparent there may be bad faith
  • Be ruthless with systems and ideas, but forgiving with people
  • Minimise or avoid drinking when engaged in formal party business
  • Drink responsibly when engaged in party social events
  • Be mindful of how much discussion time you use and speak equitably. Sometimes it's unavoidable to speak a lot (eg chair, or presenting a report) but it's not helpful to get the last word or repeat yourself.
