Privacy Submissions

Spying scandal

  • Ongoing mess, Government and Opposition being stubborn on not apologising to Indonesia for spying.
  • Strange position that may cause significant mistrust between Indonesia and Australia
  • Obama apologised to Merkel; it's not a case of "everyone is doing it, therefore it's okay."
  • Ludlam has been destroying it, more to be expected
  • PR to be drafted, international implications and right to privacy

PDC report

  • PDC is still attempting to reconvene properly, given time of year and post-election come down
  • Has been examining survey results and comments, seeing what needs to be done going forward
  • Feedback indicated some room for adjustment of existing policies
  • Next few months will be slow, because of holiday season.
  • Meetings on calendar: https://pirateparty.org.au/calendar
  • All members welcome to turn up and get involved.
  • Should do announcements of forming of working groups
  • Tasmania is likely to need help on state issues
    • Could probably be rolled into national polices at the same time
    • Will be up to people looking at state issues as the branch forms
    • Policy development at the state level is unchartered waters, will need to play by ear
    • PDC should be happy to work with state branches developing local policies if needed
    • Given time states should be forming their own PDCs
    • Federal policy overrides state policy, could cause problems if a state develops a policy only to have it overriden by federal policy
    • Don't want to spend a long time working on a policy to have it thrown away.

TPP

  • Brendan has been working on a lot of stuff since the leak of the IP Chapter
  • It's full of the worst things we expected it to have
  • Negotiating positions are terrible
  • DFAT have been lying about the negotiating positions
  • AFTINET protest about TPP in Sydney, November 29
  • Brendan is speaking at this event
  • Brendan was also elected to the EFA Board over the weekend.
  • Would be nice to make a video about the TPP
    • Always ends in failure
    • Seems to be the only thing that makes an impact though
    • We lack people with the talent and the time

State reports

Queensland

  • Pirate Party presence at anti-bikie law rally
  • Banner got plenty of exposure
  • Next meeting is Thursday at the Hoo Ha Bar, Southbank
  • Need to organise appropriate pamphlets; nothing to give people
  • Trying to get restoreqld.org.au off the ground
  • Generic flyers are likely to be needed soonish, no need for state-specific ones

NSW

  • Frew and Emma attended climate protest on Sunday in Wollongong

ACT

  • Nothing to report

Victoria

  • (Nil)

Tasmania

  • Meeting last Thursday
  • About eight members and a number of drop-ins and others
  • Proposed to set up a state branch for the coming election
    • Being put to the NC at the next meeting to get the ball rolling
    • Tasmanian State Branch constitution should be the first complete

SA

  • (Nil)

WA

  • (Nil)
