Party-wide Strategy Meeting

  • The idea is that we cover 2 topics, State branches and relations with other Parties
    • Broadly, we need to get state branches together, there is a draft Constitution that can be implemented in each State and we have a basis for a unified state branch platform
    • We need people in each state to pick up the ball and run with it
    • A strategy meeting will get some of those interested to show up and get press ganged into doing the work (in theory)
  • Relations with other Parties will gauge the Party's feelings towards absorbing smaller parties, particularly those whose views are pretty close to ours
    • MarkG and Crafti have both argued in favour of approaching some of the smaller unregistered parties and it would be nice to see what members think of the idea
    • Frew was also approached by someone from another progressive party about logistics should such a thing occur
    • We don't need to debate the ins and outs of the issue now, just whether everyone agrees that we should put it to members
    • a lot of these parties are tiny single issue affairs which aren't likely to manage registration
    • One idea would be if a single issue party was "absorbed" by us, they get their policy in our policy set if it passes muster and we get the extra members and volunteers, and they get the extra size and infrastructure and registered base
    • Anything would need to be a process, especially with bigger parties which would be more than "absorption"
    • we have a process for introducing new policy, congress. We can offer to put a policy to the members and work on the administrative side of a merger but at the end of the day the council can't promise acceptance in any meaningful form
    • We won't compromise our processes
  • Lots of discomfort and opinions on the matter, basically we'd be looking at devising a process for if the issue arises
  • Look into having a meeting on Jan 13
    • See Motions
