AfP and Electoral Reform

  • There was a big Alliance for Progress backlash against the Greens last week which got press and where basically it was made very clearly how isolated the Greens are on all this
  • the Greens put out a very hastily and poorly written press release where they said now their policy is to requiring numbering 1-6 instead of the 'just vote 1' thing they were originally talking about
  • Not sure if that will improve things, but given the timing it was almost certainly a very late concession to the backlash
  • There are signs of Internal fighting on this issue
  • suspect it is being driven by Di Natale's office
  • Greens motive appears to be that their passage to being a big party depends on controlling the crossbench as a matter of core identity, and they are very annoyed that their role in that regard has been so diluted and diminished in recent years
    • they want to dominate the crossbench as a pathway to becoming a major party
    • it is also a bid to wipe out their immediate competition including us
  • we have a meeting with some of them on Sunday, but given they see such an existential threat in a growing crossbench they are unlikely to give up much more
  • Is it possible for the reforms to mean the coalition holds the senate outright? As then they destroy the benefit they supposedly gain by being the only crossbench player by making the crossbench irrelevant?
    • the numbers apparently show that in the immediate term it wouldn't lead to domination by the Libs
    • people fail to acknowledge how easy a two party system pulls to the right
    • they can't dominate straight away because there's a substantial residual crossbench which will remain for 4 more years (unless DD)
  • we've been less strident than some of the other parties so I think they're more willing to engage
  • AfP kicking around various ideas such as different party per state, or party mergers.
    • it won't be possible to win without getting around half a quota on the primary vote, so massing all the vote together is the only possible way
    • also that does save a lot of money
  • NSW Greens possibly isolated from others/DiNatale.


Brendan's crap

  • Raisely.
    • Weird new fundraising platform
    • when you sign up, they will call you and ask you what you want to do - so you will get a call from them.
    • the model is quite interesting, in that people can run subcampaigns to make you money etc
    • and there's no "minimum funding" like pozible etc
    • I'd advise someone to set this up as soon as they can and talk to the dude on the phone.
    • Mark will open a Raisely account
    • members can spin off & run new campaigns with money going to us
  • memberdb
    • it's 'done'
    • project got a bit fucked up near the end as babies started coming out of people and forced handovers happened
    • Brendan ended up being a lot more of a project manager than he had intended to
    • we got everything we needed out of this contract - though very little more than _needed_
    • Brendan will clean up some lingering bugs they didn't get around to finishing
    • on the plus side, quite a few of their devs intend to work on this in their own time for lulz
    • also two separate teams in ThoughtWorks are using the code as a base for several commercial projects - so their patches might feed back in if they're relevant
    • point is, the project is _already_ being used as a base for bigger and better things
    • Brendan spoke to the LESTp guy who wants to give us $500
      • very excited to use it even in its simple form and is optimistic for the future growth of it
    • Brendan will intend to fork the project in the next week and clean it up a lot, then try to build a community around it
    • Invoice will come when it comes
    • Deployment ETA 14 days.
    • Competitive retail value of the product - estimate $200k (so we got a good deal)
    • Crowdfunding for the MemberDB should use Raisely
      • Constant ongoing campaign could be better for this, urgency (ie Pozible deadline times) not as essential for motivation in this case and could be saved for other campaigns
    • $10k will pay for work done, another $10k will allow for continued development

    • Brendan should go to next meeting
  • There's an EFA killer coming very soon and that's all the information you'll get out of me on that
    • Brendan is so mysterious

Fundraising Strategy Meeting Reportback

  • Raisely stuff covered above
  • member renewals to be pushed once DB etc in place
  • pay what you want, but beg for more and nag for top ups.
  • Set up a raisely thing as a general crowdfund campaign. + factorit into donation platform.
  • Finalise the Etsy store and promote for merch sales.
  • General mass email and soc-med campaign when ready for it.
  • State committees to try their own fundraising as well...
  • some other bits and pieces covered about different tech and platforms and so on
  • Mention of other CS:GO type things but unsure how viable in long term
  • These Strategy meetings useful, especially as motivation around specific topics/campaigns etc
  • Upcoming TPP issue could be useful to have another strategy meeting
    • Useful to work on lobbying every person on JSCOT to try and get a unanimous rejection
    • there's enabling legislation which only the ALP can block
      • But there's enough divisions inside the Liberals that you might get one of them (however unlikely?)
      • it is without precedent a parliament passing a treaty that JSCOT said no to
    • JSCOT they destroyed ACTA
      • things can be caveated yeses - which are effectively no
      • getting TPP to be independently analysed will kill it dead
      • They did a 'its okay if you remove X...' on ACTA and it failed
      • ACTA never got ratified (signed, not ratified. signing =/= ratifying)
      • reiterate how DFAT _repeatedly lied_ saying domestic legislation would not need to change

    • So new strategy meeting Tuesday 23rd on TPP.
