National Council meeting 28th April 2020

Actual moderation on Facebook

  • NFG, paraphrased because Alex can't type that fast: Facebook page and group is many people's first port of call with the party and it's not a very welcome environment because moderation is so minimal.
  • David Read: how do we keep things transparent?
  • David Kennedy: well, there's nothing untoward with having more public things more moderated
  • NFG: People start on Facebook. First impression. If they see a bunch of dicks they won't look further. We can't be everywhere but we can do something. Why leave the cesspool open when there are better-moderated options?
  • DK: general agreement

Agreed Updates to FB group rules

  • (3) - "Attack ideas, not people. Refrain from posting anything that is likely to be inciteful, and from insulting others. If in doubt, don’t post it, or at least see point 2."
  • (5) - "This is a partisan space. If the primary purpose of your post is to promote other parties, we reserve the right to remove it. Please relate your post to Pirate politics."
  • SocMed people to do some actual moderation.


Motions

  • MOTION: notwithstanding previous motions by National Council or at the 2019 National Congress, that National Congress 2020 be entirely online.
    • Ayes: AJ, DR, DK, MW, BS, plus BB
  • MOTION: approve the following:
      • update point 3 of the FB group rules to "Attack ideas, not people. Refrain from posting anything that is likely to be inciteful, and from insulting others. If in doubt, don’t post it, or at least see point 2."
      • update point 5 of the FB group rules to "This is a partisan space. If the primary purpose of your post is to promote other parties, we reserve the right to remove it. Please relate your post to Pirate politics."
      • SocMed to do some actual moderation
    • Ayes: AJ, DR, DK, MW, BS, plus BB & NFG
    • Carried unanimously at 21:17
  • MOTION: close the meeting but stick around and finish the COVID press release
    • Carried unanimously at 21:50
