To assist your membership in determining what parties they would prefer to preference please see some information on the Party below:
The Australian Democrats were formed in 1977 and are recognised as the most democratic party within Australia. The Democrats' membership elects its own parliamentary leader and state leaders through a members ballot. We are a party of firsts and are the first environmental party in the country, we have elected the youngest person to the Senate in Natasha Stott Despoja, the first female leader of a Federal party and recently elected the youngest person to lead an Australian political party. In terms of policy the Democrats represent all Australian and not the interests of a few. We believe in open and transparent government with power vested in the people and its independent institutions. We believe in a free press and internet and that Government information belongs to the people of Australia. We do not believe in over regulated censorship of the internet, media, or art and literature. In terms of how we formulate our policy we use a triple bottom line approach where we consider environmental, social and economic policy to all have equal weighting and importance. The Democrats are focussed on a sustainable, equitable and free Australia under a Democratic government led by the people. Dan Mc Millan |
